Hi, My daughter is 19 years old, has had glandular fever for over a year now, with tonsilitus occurring every 5/6 weeks. She had multi vitamins and minerals, vitamin B6, and Echinacea. She eats well, but sometimes a picky eater! Could you please advise what meals I can cook to help her energy levels and boost here immune system. She does enjoy stews and cottage pies, pizza, pasta, and roasts, but her energy level is so low, she is sleeping all the time.

Many thanks.

Kindest regards
Lynda

What normal North American people do with trash is throw relatively clean supermarket food containers (packaging) in the trash and then dump“ dirty” food matter on top of it. The way this American ritual works is that the food containers get dirty because they are in the trash. My weird, economical countermeasure is to not put these items in the trash, rinse out these (soy) milk cartons and soup cans and put them in a separate recycling container. When you really want to freak your“ normal” American friends...

According to research conducted by the United States Department of Agriculture, high ORAC food sources reduce the aging process. These findings suggest that eating plenty of high-ORAC fruits and vegetables may help slow the processes associated with aging in both the body and the brain. ” A diet rich in naturally-derived antioxidants showed fewer age-related motor changes and outperformed their study counterparts on memory tests.” – National Institute on Aging. Judging foods according to their ORAC values is a scientific and practical guide to consuming a healthier diet. The health benefits will emerge almost instantaneously. Tiredness will subside, skin will start to clear, an increased mental alertness will develop. High ORAC foods are full of antioxidants. These protect your body and give essential nurtition to your body’s cells.

I have visited this site on many an occasion now but this post is the 1st one that I have ever commented on.

Congratulations on such a fine article and site I have found it very helpful and informative - I only wish that there were more out there like this one.

I never leave empty handed, sometimes I may even be a little disappointed that I may not agree with a post or reply that has been made. But hey! that is life and if every one agreed on the same thing what a boring old world we would live in.

Keep up the good work and cheers.

If these studies are replicated, that will be pretty exciting. Even if they aren't, it's not like broccoli is bad for me.
At least these initial reports will give me more ammo when trying to convince my wife to cook and eat vegetables that I like.

From our experience (research found in Man Cannot Live on Vitamins Alone, by Vic Shayne, PhD), the human body is not meant to consume isolated minerals and vitamins. This is why whole food supplements without any isolates (re: NutriPlex Formulas whole food supplements) exist. Foods contain vitamins, but vitamins do not contain food constituents. Is a matter of biological fact.

There is another way to "shop local" and shop smart too. I desigend a site that will allow businesses to list all their brand items free for local search. You can get free ads like on Craig's as well. Read on...

Everyone loves clean water and air. Solutions to ecological issues can be business-driven. I worked on heavy jets for 29 years and designed a better mousetrap to pay back for my carbon footprint. If this works, my new web site may help local shoppers everywhere save hundreds of millions of gallons of fuel, - a good thing.

We start with FREE basic ads for everyone, even businesses, who can list their brand items and link store locations for local, GREEN SEARCH.

Anyone listing items for sale on AdBirds.com IS GREEN. Here’s how:

GREEN SEARCH : Would you help others save fuel by shopping smartly?

Shortest – distance search returns for all items listed allow this on adbirds.com

All you do is register and post your items for sale. Save and click to pay, enter the coupon code RP08 at checkout for a free ad.

The site saves personal or retail brand items free, and shoppers can tell the site where they are starting from. AdBirds.com then calculates the distance to the item and cost of fuel that day in that zip code, and displays cost of fuel with distance to the item or store. We are planning socially responsible search too.

As much as cell phone radiation is dangerous in adults, it's effects are truly frightening for children. Cell phones cause an increased risk of cancers in adults. Scientific studies have shown that cell phone radiation penetrates a child's head up to 12 times faster that that of an adult. Please, keep your children away from cell phones. There are tools available to help protect us and reduce the effects of cell phone radiation. We must bring awareness to the public.

I’m actually less concerned about people, including children, eating tainted meat, than I am about the animal cruelty depicted:

Slaughter house humane handling policies and procedures are so minimal you’d think slaughter house management and the USDA would get it right. It shows how completely incompetent Steve Mendell, president of WaH, the whole management of WaH, as well as the USDA really are. Though such animal cruelty may not be (one hopes) the rule and just the exception, but there is a lot of animal mistreatment and cruelty going on in the slaughtering business. Billions of animals are killed each year and even if out of that if “only” tens of thousands are mistreated, that is an awful a lot of animal suffering or mistreatment. Then, we always hear from the powers that be that there’s not enough money, time or staff to cover so many animals in all the slaughterhouses, introduce humane slaughter technology, train employees and pay them well, etc., etc. Meat production could be less than half of what it is now so that slaughterhouses can cope with the number of animals, correctly implement their humane handling policies and procedures, and permit veterinarians and inspectors to do their jobs in a more thorough and consistent manner, and so forth. Mass production of ‘food animals’ has come as a result of the demand for more meat to feed more people at a cheaper price. Consumers don’t have to eat the amount of mass-produced domestic meat they do in order to stay healthy and satiated, and we don’t need the animal byproducts that go into consumer goods in the amount we currently have. Food that is made from and/or that takes sentient life (that includes plant foods) should never ever come cheap. Consumers especially should have to be made aware of and pay a much higher price of meat to cover the true costs of meat production – environmental, human, and animal.

On a final note, I could criticize groups like HSUS on a number of things, but if this undercover video is genuine I’m grateful to those who have “the stomach” to go undercover and expose such animal cruelty. I think every slaughterhouse should have surveillance video for all aspects of handling and slaughter and/or humane agents on site to ensure animals are not mistreated, that downers are identified immediately and all the animals are dispatched in nothing less than the most humane manner.

Hi Kassandra,

Thanks for visiting the naturmama® weblog and for commenting.

Studying as I do at a local University for my second degree I agree with you that funding very clearly drives research and that the payers of these dollars in many cases deliver along with them a level of intent with the expectation of results (to their positive).

However, there really is a mountain of evidence from both secondary (academic peer reviewed) and primary (anecdotal results experienced by the every day Joe) sources that support the case that eating a diet founded on whole foods (free of refined flour and other simple carbohydrates most notably sugar) in particular one based around the consumption of a suitable level of fuel foods (whole grains - 20-30%) along with varied sources of structural foods (protein - 60-65%) and essential fats :

i) lessens the glucose load on the blood,
ii) reduces insulin swing; and, in doing so
iii) empowers immune system health, which
iii) controls inflammation (and therefore disease) across the board.

Basically, an overarching view that a whole foods based eating strategy yields a system that metabolically speaking is more stable which turn assists the body in avoiding (non genetically predisposed) illness and chronic disease.

Would you not agree with this?

One thing you should always ask is "Who funded this study?"

Most people assume that since a "well known university" came out with this study that it must some how be true. Never stopping to ask who funded the study?

Universities die and survive by grants from corporations who want universities to put their seal of approval on something. If a the corporation came out with the study it would be suspect but if a university comes out with it well then people tend to believe it's true.

Think of it this way, if you're boss is paying you to do something and you don't do it how likely are you to get paid? You'd probably be looking for another job. The same thing with universities. They're given a protocol to use that the "sponsor" knows will prove whatever it is they want proved. If the university doesn't come to the same conclusion they can kiss any future grants goodbye.
