naturcomments™ - a black google saves 750 megawatt hours of power per year

Here is a little piece of “interesting” from inhabitat.com that really does make a difference.

“Nicknamed the Black Google, Blackle was created as a more energy-efficient version of the white-paged Google. The site comes in response to a blog post in January written by Mark Ontkush, a frequent contributor to Treehugger, entitled “Black Google Would Save 750 Megawatt-hours a Year.” The estimate is based on the difference in average watts it takes to display a white web page versus a black web page, essentially 74 to 59, and weighs it against how many times people “Google” something in a day (roughly 200 million hits).”

In following the discussion that has come from this post at Inhabitat.com it is important to point out that this difference only relates to the old Cathode Ray Tube (CRT) monitors and not the more recent LCD flat screens.

According to one blogger apparently to “make” the “colour” black an LCD monitor actually requires more power than it does to make white.
